Your Katy audiologist is able to put together a tinnitus management plan to help you learn to tune out the ringing, buzzing, roaring, clicking or hissing you are hearing. So, have you considered tinnitus retraining therapy?
Tinnitus Treatment
Tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) is one of the most popular forms of tinnitus treatment. TRT centers around counseling, which helps teach you about your condition and how retraining techniques and sound enrichment, and can change the way you react to and perceive your tinnitus.
If your Katy audiologist determines that retraining therapy is the best option for you, a counseling appointment will be scheduled. Throughout the duration of your tinnitus treatment you will visit the office fairly regularly. While the duration of TRT differs from patient to patient, the counseling is consistently effective for tinnitus patients and is proven to work well short-term and long-term.
Tinnitus Retraining Therapy Consists of Three Distinct Parts.
- Counseling sessions. At these meetings with your Katy audiologist you will learn more about what tinnitus is and how your perception of it affects the way you react to the sounds. As you progress, you’ll learn more about methods for changing how you perceive tinnitus. Through the counseling and education, your reactions to tinnitus will be altered, making you less and less aware of your symptoms.
- Sound enrichment. This method must be used 24-hours a day to mask your tinnitus. Since avoiding silence is key, you will have the opportunity to choose new background sounds of your life. You will then learn how to incorporate these new sounds into every moment of your day. Since this is not the easiest task, it is important to work with your knowledgeable and experienced Katy audiologists who will guide you.
- Retraining exercises. Your audiologist will teach you these exercises, developed to reduce your reaction to your tinnitus, decrease your awareness of the sound and eventually eliminate any feelings of annoyance associated with tinnitus. To help you implement them into your life, your Katy audiologist will walk you through the exercises during your counseling sessions.
